How XAUUSD works: a guide to risk management
XAUUSD is the pair that expresses the price of one ounce of gold in dollars: when the quote rises, each ounce is worth more dollars, and when it falls, less. It trades as an almost continuous market from Sunday night to Friday, and its price is driven mainly by the dollar, real rates and safe-haven demand. The result in your account depends not only on getting the direction right, but on how you translate the price movement into real money through position size.
What moves gold
Gold pays no interest or dividends: its price is not formed by discounting future cash flows as a share's is, but by supply and demand. Supply is relatively rigid (mining, recycling and central bank sales) and demand is spread between jewellery, industry, physical investment and ETFs, and official reserves. That detail explains why gold reacts so strongly to macro variables and so little to corporate news. You have a broader view of the asset in the section on gold of the academy.
Dollar, real rates and safe haven
- Dollar. Gold is quoted in dollars, so there is a fairly usual inverse relationship between the strength of the greenback and the price of the metal. It is a trend, not a law: there are days when both rise.
- Real rates. It is the most consistent driver in the medium term. The real rate is the nominal interest rate minus expected inflation, and it is approximated by the yield on inflation-protected government debt. When real rates rise, holding gold (which yields nothing) has a greater opportunity cost and the price tends to come under downward pressure; when they fall or are negative, the opposite happens.
- Safe haven. Wars, credit crises or market shocks push money towards gold. With a nuance that surprises many: in the first hours of a strong panic, gold also falls, because investors liquidate what they can to cover margin. Safe-haven behaviour appears afterwards, not always in the first minute.
- Central banks. Their sustained purchases have been a relevant demand factor in recent years, with a slower impact than that of macro data.
None of these variables acts mechanically, and almost all of them reach the price already discounted. Trading the newspaper headline is usually too late.
How its volatility is measured
Gold moves, in dollars per ounce, much more than the major currency pairs, and its spread is proportionally higher. Before considering any trading approach, measure that volatility on the timeframe in which you are going to trade; if you don't, the stop and the lot will be guesswork.
Average range and ATR
- Range. High minus low of a session or a candle. It tells you how much it has moved, not how much it can move.
- ATR (Average True Range). Average of the true range over the last N candles (14 is the standard). It is read in the same unit as the price, that is, in dollars per ounce. It does not indicate direction: it indicates distance travelled.
- Practical use. If the daily ATR of XAUUSD is 30 dollars and you place a stop of 5, normal noise will take you out. If your spread is equivalent to a large part of the ATR of your timeframe, the cost eats into the margin of the trade.
- Context. Compare the current ATR with that of recent weeks: when volatility compresses, ranges narrow; when it expands after a data release or a geopolitical event, the stops that previously held stop holding.
Position size and point value
This is where money is most often lost. In XAUUSD, 1 standard lot equals 100 ounces of gold (some brokers have other specifications: always check this in the contract specifications before trading). The point value is how much your position gains or loses for each minimum price movement, normally the second decimal place (0.01 USD).
| Size | Ounces | 1.00 USD price movement | Value per point (0.01) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard lot (1.00) | 100 | 100 USD | 1.00 USD |
| Mini lot (0.10) | 10 | 10 USD | 0.10 USD |
| Micro lot (0.01) | 1 | 1 USD | 0.01 USD |
If you move to silver (XAGUSD), the contract changes: with most brokers, 1 lot is 5,000 ounces, so the value per point is very different and the lot you used in gold no longer works. Silver is more volatile and less liquid than gold; for reference, in XAGUSD a 1.00 USD movement with a standard lot is 5,000 USD.
Numerical example with a 1,000 account
Suppose a hypothetical price of 2,400.00 USD per ounce and a risk rule of 1% per trade: 10 USD.
- 10 USD price stop (for example, entry at 2,400 and exit at 2,390).
- With 0.01 lot (1 ounce) the loss is 10 USD: 1% of the account. Correct.
- With 0.10 lot (10 ounces) the loss would be 100 USD: 10% of the account for a single trade. Too much.
- With 1.00 lot (100 ounces) would be 1,000 USD: the entire account.
Leverage does not change that calculation; it only reduces the margin the broker holds to open the position (with 1:100, a 0.01 lot ties up about 24 USD in margin, not 2,400). You can practise the reverse calculation —from risk to lot— in the calculator for lot size.
Trading hours and sessions with greater liquidity
XAUUSD trades approximately 23 hours a day from Sunday to Friday, with a daily maintenance break. Times are in UTC, which shift with daylight saving time:
| Session | Approximate window (UTC) | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Asian | 00:00–07:00 | Narrow ranges, somewhat wider spreads |
| London | 07:00–16:00 | Volume comes in and the day's ranges tend to be defined |
| London–New York overlap | 12:00–16:00 | Greater liquidity and cleaner moves |
| New York (afternoon) | 16:00–21:00 | Macro releases and the metal's reference close |
Two warnings: during the daily break and the weekly opening gap the spread widens and market orders are executed worse; and in the minutes before and after inflation or employment data, or Federal Reserve decisions, the price can jump several dollars with no intermediate quote. If your trading does not take that into account, stay out.
To trade gold on MetaTrader 5 the process is: add XAUUSD to the Market Watch window, open the symbol specification and check the contract size, decimals, spread and swap, and from there place the order with volume, stop loss and take profit defined before entering. Nothing more; the platform does not decide for you.
Typical mistakes
- Copying the lot size from EURUSD. A lot in forex does not have the same value per point as in gold. It is the mistake that breaks the most small accounts.
- Thinking of the stop in points rather than in money. A stop only makes sense when you know how many euros or dollars you lose if it is hit.
- Trading the news without a plan. The spread widens and slippage appears just when you are most confident in the direction.
- Ignoring the cost. Spread and swap, if you hold the position overnight, keep eating into your result. In intraday trading, the spread is paid on every trade.
- Confusing correlation with causation. The dollar and real rates guide, they do not determine tomorrow's price.
- Assuming that gold always rises in crises. In the initial panic it can fall along with everything else.
- Moving the stop or averaging down losses. In an asset that can move 30 dollars in a session, that habit is the fast track to total loss.
- Choosing a broker for the bonus. Before depositing, check regulation, segregation of funds and withdrawal conditions.
Having a strategy defined in writing —which scenario, which stop, which lot— is worth more than any new indicator. If you are starting out, the gold course is designed precisely to put these pieces in order before risking capital.
Frequently asked questions
What is forex and how does it work?
Forex is the currency market: the exchange of one currency for another at a given exchange rate. It operates in a decentralised way, off-exchange, with banks and brokers as intermediaries, and trades practically 24 hours a day from Monday to Friday. When you buy a pair, you gain if the base currency appreciates against the quoted currency; the result in your account depends on the position size and the price differential.
How do you learn forex trading?
With structured training, plenty of practice on demo and risk management that you apply from day one. The sensible order is: understand how price is formed and what a lot is, define a strategy with written rules, measure it on a demo account with a sufficient number of trades and only then move to live with the minimum size. The trading psychology (discipline, managing losses, not improvising) weighs more in the result than the search for the perfect indicator.
How can you tell if an investment platform is safe?
Check three things: that it is regulated by an official body and that you can verify the licence number in the regulator's register; that client funds are segregated from the company's own funds; and that withdrawal conditions are clear, with no unusual minimum deposits or bonuses that lock up capital. Try a small withdrawal before depositing more. No platform removes market risk; regulation protects against the company's bad practices, not against your trading decisions.
How to trade gold on MetaTrader 5?
Add the XAUUSD symbol to the Market Watch window, check its specification (contract size, decimal places, spread, swap and trading hours) and open the order stating volume, stop loss and take profit. First calculate the lot size based on the risk you accept and the distance to your stop. Bear in mind the daily break and the weekly opening gap, when the spread widens.
How does forex trading work?
It consists of speculating on the change in the exchange rate between two currencies: you buy a pair if you think the first currency will appreciate and sell it if you think the opposite. The broker gives you access through leverage, which increases the position size but also the loss in dollars. Profit or loss is calculated as the price difference multiplied by the position size, minus the spread and commissions.
