VPS for MetaTrader 5: where to run an EA

By Luis Sanches y Milton Bertillo, mentors of SHEFA Trading Academy · Updated on 21 September 2026 · Reading time: 6 min

An expert only trades while the terminal is open and connected. If your plan depends on MetaTrader 5 running on an index that trades 24 hours a day, the home computer is a weak point: it shuts down, updates or loses the connection. A virtual server solves that, but not everything that is claimed out there.

What a VPS needs to trade with MT5

RequirementWhyHow to check
Windows with a desktop The MetaTrader 5 terminal needs a graphical session; it does not run “headless” in a pure console. The provider must offer Windows with remote access and a user session, not just a command line.
Automatic startup After a restart (system maintenance or update), the terminal must reopen by itself, with the session logged in. Restart the server on purpose and check that the terminal opens and operates without you doing anything.
Symbols loaded Synthetic indices do not appear in the default list: if they are not in “Market Watch”, the expert advisor will not see the symbol. Add the symbols, leave the chart open and confirm that the prices update.
Reasonable latency Closer to the broker's server = less slippage on execution. Measure latency from the server itself; it varies a lot on accounts with a server in Europe or Asia.
Unrestricted outbound connections Some expert advisors send or receive data (alerts, local connectors, publications). Check that the VPS network can access the internet without unusual filters.
Sufficient resources The terminal, several charts and historical data consume RAM and disk; falling short causes shutdowns. Monitor usage with two or three charts open and history loaded.

Two routes: MQL5's managed VPS or your own

MQL5 managed VPSYour own Windows server
What it is for Run MetaTrader 5 expert advisors and indicators with the terminal hosted by MetaQuotes. Run the terminal y any other program of yours (scripts, services, connectors).
Advantages Maintenance handled by the provider and a direct connection to the broker; you sign up from the terminal itself. Full control: you can install whatever you need and administer the machine as you wish.
Limits You cannot install programs other than the terminal or use it as a server for other tools. Configuration, automatic startup and updates are your responsibility.
Practical rule: If all you need is for an expert advisor to trade non-stop, the managed service is the least work option. If your setup includes anything else (a local bridge, a service that publishes data, your own tools), you need a Windows machine you can administer yourself.

What still goes wrong after paying for the VPS

  1. The terminal does not start on its own. Without automatic session startup, a server restart leaves the expert advisor stopped until someone logs in manually.
  2. Algorithmic trading disabled. It is the same permission as on your PC: the button must be active and the expert advisor authorised to trade.
  3. Symbols not loaded. The chart opens with the correct symbol, but the Market Watch list is empty and the expert advisor cannot trade instruments it cannot see.
  4. No history. Some expert advisors need previous bars to calculate: on a newly installed server you have to let the terminal download the data.
  5. Dependence on a single machine. If the VPS goes down and you only have the system there, there is no plan B: you should know what you will do with open positions.

Almost all of those failures are diagnosed in the Journal tab of the terminal. The step-by-step procedure is in why MT5 does not run my EA.

Before paying for it: three questions

Frequently asked questions

Do you need a VPS to trade 24 hours a day?

The terminal needs to be open and connected. It can be your PC left on; a VPS avoids depending on it when you turn it off or the connection drops.

Is the MetaQuotes VPS useful?

Yes, for running expert advisors and terminal indicators. If you also need to install your own programs, you must use a Windows server that you administer yourself.

What requirements must your own VPS meet?

Windows with a desktop, automatic start-up of the session, symbols loaded, reasonable latency and enough resources for the terminal and its historical data.

Why doesn't it trade on the VPS if it does on my PC?

Because of automatic start-up, algorithmic trading permission, an empty symbol list or the expert advisor being on another chart. The terminal Journal tells you.

Does it improve results?

No. It provides continuity and stability; it does not add a statistical edge or fix a strategy with no positive expectancy.

Automating what already works

At the academy, expert advisors are used for what risk requires: calculating size, placing stops, respecting schedules and limits. Never to 'guess' the market. Training in Spanish, with no promises of profitability.
