How to trade gold on MetaTrader 5: a guide with risk management
Trading gold on MetaTrader 5 consists of opening and managing positions on the XAUUSD symbol from the platform, choosing direction, lot size, stop loss and target. The difference from forex is the scale: gold is quoted in dollars per ounce and one standard lot is equivalent to 100 ounces, so every dollar of movement carries considerable weight in the account. Before clicking buy or sell, adjust the lot, the timing and the stop distance to the metal's actual volatility.
What moves gold
The price of gold does not respond to a single factor. It is formed by the sum of macro flows, physical demand, institutional positioning and episodes of risk aversion. Understanding what weighs most at any given moment prevents you from trading XAUUSD as if it were just another currency pair.
Dollar, real rates and safe haven
Gold is quoted in dollars, so a stronger dollar tends to make it more expensive for the rest of the world and usually puts downward pressure on the price. It is a usual relationship, not a mechanical law: there are days when both rise at the same time.
The most closely followed driver is real rates, that is, the yield on government debt adjusted for inflation. Gold pays no coupon, so it competes poorly when real rates rise sharply and gains appeal when they fall or turn negative. If you want to go deeper into how the symbol works, you will find it developed in how XAUUSD works.
The safe-haven component appears in episodes of financial or geopolitical stress, but it is worth debunking the myth: gold does not rise in every crisis, and in broad market sell-offs it can fall along with other assets because investors sell what they can liquidate to cover losses in other positions. Add to the equation central bank purchases and physical jewellery demand in India and China, which act more as a backdrop than as a daily trigger.
How its volatility is measured
Gold's volatility is higher than that of major forex pairs in terms of daily range, and very different depending on the session. Measuring it before calculating the lot is what separates a planned trade from a gamble.
Average range and ATR
Two practical references:
- Average range: the distance between the high and the low of the last sessions. It gives a quick idea of how much the market is moving right now.
- ATR (Average True Range): it indicates the average range per candle over a given period. It is included in MetaTrader 5; simply add it to the chart and adjust the period (14 is the standard) to the timeframe you trade.
The usual use of ATR is not to predict, but to size: if the daily ATR of XAUUSD is wide, a 2-dollar stop is doomed to be hit by simple noise. Place the stop at a distance related to volatility (for example, 1.5 or 2 times the ATR of your timeframe) and assume that the price will oscillate within that range normally. Also check the spread: on XAUUSD it widens at the session open and at the daily rollover.
Position size and point value
Here is the most important practical difference compared with forex. A standard lot of XAUUSD is 100 ounces, and the point value depends on how many decimal places your broker quotes the symbol to and on the position size. Check the symbol specification on the platform before trading: not all brokers show the same number of decimals.
With a 100-ounce contract and two decimal places in the price (1 point = 0.01 USD), the point value per lot is 1 USD:
| Price movement (XAUUSD) | 1.00 lot (100 oz) | 0.10 lots (10 oz) | 0.01 lots (1 oz) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.10 USD | 10 USD | 1 USD | 0.10 USD |
| 1.00 USD | 100 USD | 10 USD | 1 USD |
| 5.00 USD | 500 USD | 50 USD | 5 USD |
Numerical example with a 1,000 account
Suppose a 1,000 USD account and a maximum risk of 1% per trade: 10 USD.
If your analysis tells you that the stop needs to be 5.00 USD away from the entry price, each lot at risk equals 5.00 × 100 = 500 USD. The size would be 10 / 500 = 0.02 lots. If the stop needed 8.00 USD, the calculation would give 0.0125 lots; with a minimum of 0.01 lots, you would trade 0.01 and assume slightly less risk than planned. If the result forces you below 0.01, the trade does not fit your plan.
Note what the example implies: with a 5 USD stop, a full lot would risk 50% of the account. That is why gold does not handle high leverage well. You can automate the figure in gold lot calculator.
If you trade silver (XAGUSD), the reasoning is identical but the contract is not the same: silver moves in ounces with a different lot size and higher relative volatility, so the lot you use in gold does not transfer directly. Always check your broker's symbol specification and review the whole picture in the section on gold.
Hours and sessions with greater liquidity
XAUUSD trades practically from Sunday evening to Friday evening (broker server time). Liquidity is not constant:
- London open: European volume comes in and the range starts to widen.
- London–New York overlap: it is the window with the most liquidity and, usually, better spread conditions.
- Asian session: shorter moves and less directional movement; useful for range traders, uncomfortable for those looking for momentum.
- Day change / rollover: the spread widens and execution worsens. Avoid opening or closing positions right at that moment.
Also bear in mind the cost of holding the position open for several days (swap), which can be significant in commodities and should be reviewed before planning long-term trades.
Typical mistakes
- Using forex lots in gold. One lot in EURUSD and one lot in XAUUSD are completely different in terms of risk.
- Stop too tight. The metal's normal movement sweeps 1- or 2-dollar stops without the underlying idea being wrong.
- Trading with maximum leverage because the margin allows it. The platform allows sizes that your account cannot support.
- Ignoring the schedule. Trading in the Asian session without adapting the target is a common source of frustration.
- Choosing a broker because of the bonus. The best broker for trading gold is not the one that promises the most, but the one with verifiable regulation, a competitive spread on XAUUSD, stable execution and a minimum lot size that fits your account.
- Not checking the symbol specification: decimals, point value, swap and schedule can change between brokers and between account types.
On how to know whether an investment platform is safe: look for the registration number, check the regulator on its official website (not the broker's), verify whether the money is held in segregated accounts and be wary of anyone who promises results. Frequently asked questions
What is forex and how does it work?
Forex is the foreign exchange market: pairs such as EUR/USD or GBP/JPY are bought and sold, and the price reflects how many units of the quote currency one unit of the base currency costs. It operates in a decentralised way, among banks, institutions and brokers, with continuous trading from Sunday to Friday. It is traded with leverage and the cost appears in the spread and the swap.
How to learn forex trading?
With structured training and deliberate practice: understanding what drives each market, managing risk before looking for entries, trading on a demo account until you have a repeatable method and keeping a record of every trade. Avoid relying on other people's signals and be wary of any promise of results. The learning curve is measured in months, not days.
How do you know if an investment platform is safe?
Check the legal entity and its registration number, verify the licence in the regulator's official register and confirm the segregation of client funds. Review the withdrawal conditions, the real costs and whether the domain matches that of the regulated entity. A platform that pressures you to deposit quickly or plays down the risks deserves suspicion.
How to trade gold on MetaTrader 5?
Open the XAUUSD symbol in Market Watch, define the direction and entry point, calculate the lot size from the stop distance and the risk assumed (for example, 1% of the account) and send the order with its stop loss and target. Then review the schedule, the spread and the swap. The mechanics are simple; what makes the difference is position size and management.
How does forex trading work?
You speculate on the change in the exchange rate between two currencies: if you buy, you gain when the base currency appreciates against the quote currency, and if you sell, the opposite. The result is calculated on the position size, not on the capital deposited, hence the central role of leverage and risk control.
